Monroe is cheese country's capital, and it does not pretend otherwise. The Green County Courthouse stands in the middle of the square with the whole city arranged around it, the old brewery still runs, and Cheese Days brings tens of thousands of people in every other autumn. It is the furthest west we regularly run, and the housing rewards the trip: substantial nineteenth century brick and frame homes, Swiss and German building traditions, and farmsteads with stone-walled outbuildings. Monroe was settled by Swiss and German immigrants who built the cheese industry that still defines Green County. The National Historic Cheesemaking Center occupies the old railroad depot, and Minhas Craft Brewery traces back to one of the oldest brewing operations in the state. The courthouse square historic district holds brick commercial blocks and the surrounding streets carry ornate Victorians, solid brick foursquares and interwar bungalows. On private property — a driveway, a yard, a farm lane, a job site — you will not normally need a permit anywhere in Green County, and that covers the large majority of our Monroe deliveries.
